The current Municipal Council is the 3rd and came into being in June 2020. It has a representation of 22 councilors from the 2 Divisions, and the Municipality

 
The Council of 22 includes the Mayor, directly elected Male Councilors, Directly Elected Woman Councilor, Women elected Councilors, Councilors representing the Youths, Councilors representing People with Disabilities, Councilors representing the elderly and Councilors representing the Workers.
 
The main objective of Council is to formulate municipal policies and ensure their implementation in compliance with the Government policy
 
It is expected that Council through its legislative processes should lead the municipality to: have corruption free, accountable and transparent system, and have an improved legislative process, this should be done by addressing the objectives of strengthening transparency, accountability and anti-corruption systems, effective governance and policy management strengthened.
 
When all these are done, it surmounts to: improved transparency and accountability, improved financial management, efficiency in procurement process observed, increases accountability and transparency, improved service delivery, improved compliance with accountability rules and regulations, improved infrastructural development and improved capacity in decision making, planning and policy/program implementation
