BUSIA MAIN MARKET

Busia Main Market is one of those newly reconstructed facilities with support from Market and Agricultural Trade Improvement Project (MATIP II) whose overall goal is to contribute to poverty reduction and economic growth in Busia Municipality and Uganda at large through enhanced marketing of agricultural Produce. The market started operating in May 2021.

Busia Main Market is a key commercial center and a major regional hub for cross-border trade, primarily in agricultural produce and general merchandise, sitting right on the border between Uganda and Kenya.

Busia Main Market is a significant factor in the tourism appeal of the Busia border region, offering a rich and authentic cultural and economic experience that goes beyond typical sightseeing since it’s a local attraction that serves as a dynamic, living microcosm of East African cross-border trade and culture.

The Market is Zoned into Seventeen (17) Sections to include fish market as tourism appeal rooted in its role as a vital center for fish coming from Lake Victoria, Lake Kyoga, and even farmed fish, before being distributed across Uganda, Kenya, and into countries like the DRC, Southern Sudan, and Rwanda.

Therefore, tourists get to see the various species traded, primarily Nile Perch (Lates) and Tilapia (Oreochromis), alongside smaller fish like the “sardine” Rastrineobola (mukene) and Lungfish (Protopterus).

Early every morning at 07:00 Am , trade  tourists from Kenya influx  to the market to Sample or buy fresh fish (Nile Perch, Tilapia) or locally processed fish (smoked/dried) to be cooked at a local eatery or residence and resale for profits in the Kenya market.

While the fish market and that of  local produce or cereal are  a major draw, the rest of the Busia Main Market (as a general market and border town hub) is a vibrant and compelling destination for tourists interested in trade, such as fresh foods, general merchandise,Fabrics and foreingn excahange among others.

Busia Municipality is a local government in Busia District, Eastern Uganda, at the border of Kenya.
