The Maize and Grain Business at Busia.

The Busia border, connecting Uganda and Kenya, is a historically significant and dynamic hub for the maize and grain trade in East Africa. The business involves substantial formal and informal cross-border movement of cereals, primarily destined for the Kenyan market.

Maize is the most significant commodity, but the market also trades in other grains and cereals like Beans (Yellow), Beans (Nambale Short), Millet, Red Sorghum and Soya Bean.

In a bid to improve Agricultural trade in the region, the government of Uganda with support from African Development Bank (AfDB) constructed a 3,000 metric tonne maize grain facility which produces maize flour every day and mainly improves the quality of maize products that can meet the international market standards. The Facility is majorly comprised of pre-cleaning, drying, milling; storage of flour and animals’ feeds.

H.E President Y. K Museveni commissioned and inspected the fully installed Value Additional Machines on 1st December 2020.

Early every morning at 07:00 Am , trade  tourists from Kenya influx  to the market to Sample or buy fresh fish (Nile Perch, Tilapia) or locally processed fish (smoked/dried) to be cooked at a local eatery or residence and resale for profits in the Kenya market.

Busia Municipality is a local government in Busia District, Eastern Uganda, at the border of Kenya.
